Puerto Rico outlined a new recipe for success at the AAU Club Nationals over seven days of competition at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Disney World.

No. 1: Show up en masse.

No. 2: Learn to race walk.

Puerto Rico brought the largest contingent of any club – 204 athletes – who funnel into one organization for the national meet. The athletes come from 21 towns on the Caribbean island, which is a territory of the U.S.

Puerto Rico piled up 673.5 points over the course of seven days and easily outscored the top clubs from the mainland. Titans Track Club of Marietta, Ga. was second with 474.5 points and brought less than 100 athletes to the meet, which is also part of the ESPN Rise Games.

“We are very happy,” head coach Osvaldo Lopez said. “We are going to give that trophy to the race walking team.”

Racewalking, held during the first two days of the seven-day meet, proved to be Puerto Rico’s bread and butter. Racewalkers scored 281 of the team’s 673.5 points (41.7 percent).

Puerto Rico’s racewalkers, alone, scored almost enough points to crack the top five in the combined overall club scoring. In the young men’s 3,000-meter walk Puerto Rico swept places 1-6 and scooped up 36 points.

“Racewalk is booming in Puerto Rico,” Lopez said.

The credit goes to a coach named Miguel Figueroa, who is transforming track and field on the island one step at a time.

“(Track and field) is growing,” said Lopez, a one-time decathlete and jack-of-all-trades coach. “It is not the most popular sport, such as baseball or basketball, but now, especially, the racewalk is now booming in Puerto Rico.”

Puerto Rico may have discovered its niche and it happened quickly. Last year, Lopez brought 29 athletes to the AAU Club championships. This year, with the contingent built around the racewalkers, the popularity of the entire sport has lifted.

Lopez said high costs will prevent taking more than about 40 athletes to the AAU Junior Olympics in New Orleans, which begin on July 30. They will bring the athletes with the best opportunities for success – the racewalkers.
